*Born in Oslo, Sonia Henie took the gold medal in the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Winter Olympics. She had earlier placed eighth in a field of eight at the 1924 Winter Olympics, at the age of eleven. During the 1924 program, she skated over to the side of the rink several times to ask her coach for directions.

By the next Olympiad, She needed no such assistance. She won her first of ten consecutive World Figure Skating Championships in 1927 at the age of fifteen, and her first Olympic gold medal the following year. She also won six consecutive European championships.

She is credited with being the first to adopt the short skirt costume in figure skating, and the first to make use of dance choreography. She was also an accomplished tennis player.

(Here is a bit of trivia: Sonja Henie was featured in the Final Jeopardy category on June 15, 2005 as "In 1938, at age 25, She became the youngest person made a knight first class of the Order of St. Olav." Alex Trebek called this a "particularly difficult clue". )

Sales Make it Happen

Sales Isn't Just for the Salesperson

by Robert Teichman, CLP

Finally, the equipment is verified, the deal is booked, the vendor and the salesperson are paid, and the documentation department closes the file. Now the customer will be the responsibility of the billing department for the rest of the lease. Right?

Wrong!

Success in the equipment leasing business depends on continuing to increase the number of transactions written. You can achieve that by writing many new deals, and constantly trying to find new customers, or you can reach the goal by developing and improving relationships you have already established.

Many salespeople in our business believe that equipment leasing is a "deal" business. It isn't. It is "relationship business." Studies have proved time and time again that it is far easier and less costly to sell to existing customers than to develop new ones.

But how do you maintain relationships when most companies buy equipment only occasionally? Certainly, you stay in close touch with your customer. You call your contact person often. You know when the company makes decisions on its capital budget and you contact them then. But did you know that your documentation officer can be your best friend? After all, it is usually the documentation person who is the last one to talk to your customer when the lease is booked.

Since some leases take considerable time to close, your customer may have decided to get some more equipment by then. During the last conversation when the lease closes, the documentation officer could ask if the customer is satisfied with the service, and could then ask if the customer has any additional equipment financing needs. You might be surprised to learn that more equipment is on its way.

Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that selling is not limited to the salesperson. Closing a deal requires the cooperation of Sales, Credit and Documentation. And while the salesperson acts as the Relationship Manager, the other members of the Production Team do their part to help retain the customer's good will and promote future business.

In a successful equipment leasing company, everybody sells.

Letters-We get eMail

Joe Bonanno, CLP NAELB Legal Counsel

"Thanks for the kind words about all my favorite leasing associations and foundations, but Joe is the only legal counsel NAELB has or needs. My job these days is to pontificate without accountability like any retiree and try to stay out of Joe's way. "

Barry Marks, Esq.

(Leasing News changed the copy on line as we were under the impression the position alternated each year. Editor

Only brokers have a vote and sit on the board of directors, except for their legal counsel. This contribibution has been a main stay since the start of the organization, where both Joseph Bonanno, CLP, and Barry Marks, Esq., at one time alternatively served as "legal counsel each year." Both should be credited for their involvement from the very beginning, one of the main reasons for the growth of this association of brokers.Marks is now retired from the NAELB position, saying, "Joe is the only legal counsel NAELB has or needs."

Joesph Bonanno, CLP, is serving as legal counsel this year.

Who could forget Linda Kester???

"Thanks for remembering me!

"Yes, I'm still providing sales training for equipment leasing professionals. In fact 2006 marks my 10th year in business. This year has started out very strong. I've been booked solid in January and February, and have had to turn down clients.

"Publishing my article from six years ago forces me to ask the question:

"How has leasing changed since 2001?

"#1. The past six years have shown tremendous growth in E-commerce. Lessors web sites are interactive. Lessees and vendors enter their own credit applications directly into the Lessor's system.

"#2. More Lessors have faxable language in their lease providing quicker funding to the vendor.

"#3. 2003 brought changes to IRS Section 179 increasing the amount

that could be written off in one year from $25,000 to $100,000.

"#4. Direct Marketing Association surveys indicate that email is becoming the preferred method of business to business communication.

"#5.The consultative sales process has prevailed. The best people in the industry have developed excellent relationship building skills. They are expert advisors rather than leasing salespeople.

"Equipment leasing continues to grow and you, Kit Menkin, are the daily dominate voice. I received nine orders for my CD program, Prospecting Tips for Leasing Sales Professionals, after you mentioned me on Wednesday

"Thank You. Keep your eyes open for my book on lease marketing that Barry Marks is publishing."

"Hey, Rudy! Your dog can bark, but can he hunt?"

John Estok

Executive Vice President

IFC Credit Corporation

"Estok insulted your paper in court. He mocked its professional standing.

"Those statements where made by a man who signed an affidavit that claimed they paid $9100.00 for a lease, but the check reflects a payment of $7000.00 in one of my cases.

"In the case I saw in trial last week IFC had an affidavit claiming to have paid about 24k but failed to disclose that with the multiple layers of holdbacks, they really only paid out about 11K (that is a big time holdback).

"Did you know that IFC has a 1 million dollar hold-back account?

"They held back big parts of Norv sales and never credited them back.

"They filed 550 lawsuits claiming certain amounts when in fact they paid sometimes as little as 30% of the face value.

"They filed fraudulent affidavits in a number of Texas cases and in their home state.

"Ask them about holdbacks."

(Name with Held)

(Leasing News asked Mr. Estok for a comment. His boss Rudy Trebels did not want to make any comment about cases in litigation, but evidently that does not apply to Executive Vice-President John Estok. "Hey, Rudy! Your dog can bark, but can he hunt?"

We understand the Federal Trade Commission has many questions to ask him, and also have brought up the names Brad Wheatley, who is now living in California (his brother put 1.mm in equity into the deal) and Doug Metz, who lives in Dana Point, the site of the next UAEL Conference in California. Leasing News also received the tip, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who is running for governor, in about two weeks is also going to enjoin FTC for violations of New York State law. What they see is not only the return of the money to the lessees, $13 million, but penalties, fines, and as they say on the Wheel of Fortune, now we are into some "Big Money." Also remember, while the FTC doesn't get into criminal action, the New York State Attorney General has the ability to do so, as does the New Jersey State Attorney General's office, who is also following the FTC investigation. This isn't Illinois, Rudy, barking is not going to scare them off. Kit Menkin.)

Bode Ace Menkin

Our Labrador retriever born December 10, 2005, Madera, California. His name is pronounced, "Bo-dee," named after Bode Miller, the US Olympic skier. The "Ace" because he is an "Ace" dog. The initials spell out BAM !!!

Readers may remember our dog Sammie who passed away December 2003. We had lost Corrie the year before, her sister.

Both died of cancer. We waited a year. Then my idea was to get Sue a dog for Valentine's Day. We were looking for a female as all our dogs the last twenty years have been female. Sue fell in love with Bode when he came up to her. I picked him up, too, and the decision was easy.

What a great dog! He is an "Ace."

HSBC Bank Canada reports earnings up 32.5% in 2005 to $457 million

CPCnews

VANCOUVER (CP) - HSBC Bank Canada has reported a 32.5 per cent increase in 2005 net income to $457 million.

The Canadian unit of global financial-services giant HSBC Holdings PLC said Tuesday that fourth-quarter net income was $132 million, up 53.5 per cent from a year earlier. Return on equity was 21.3 per cent for the year, up from 18.3 per cent in 2004, and 23.8 per cent for the quarter, up from 16.6 per cent a year earlier.

HSBC Canada ended the year with assets of $49.2 billion, up 13.6 per cent on the year, and funds under management grew 15.8 per cent to $20.5 billion.

The results, stated in Canadian dollars, "reflected the robust Canadian economy and the strength of our customers," stated Lindsay Gordon, President and CEO.

The year's net interest income was boosted 12.7 per cent to $1.01 billion thanks to lending growth. Non-interest revenues gained 8.4 per cent to $570 million on increased investment administration fees, credit fees and foreign exchange revenue.

"Lastly, the stable credit environment in Canada throughout much of 2005 meant lower provisions for credit losses and resulted in a reversal in the fourth quarter from our general allowance for credit losses," Gordon added.

For the coming year, "We expect to fully leverage our marketing efforts to help generate even more awareness of the HSBC brand within Canada to deliver sustainable organic growth."

Today's Top Event in History

1917-Birthday of Theresa Castro - US businesswoman, co-owner of Castro Convertible, virtually a synonym for convertible sofa. She had saved her tips as a waitress to help start the company with her husband Bernard. Historians record it as the last major invention in sofa beds, actually the result of customers' requests of an upholsterer named Bernard Castro (1904-1991) to produce a davenport sofa bed that looked and worked well. The Castro Convertible, patented in 1948, with its folding springs that pull out from inside the sofa frame, was the prototype for most modern sofa beds. A recent departure from the Castro type sofa bed features covered foam sections that stack to become seats and unfold to become beds. These designs reflect an ongoing need for cheaper more portable furniture. After becoming wealthy, Theresa Castro became well-known as an energetic charitable benefactor in New York and Florida, Her daughter, Bernadette Castro, at age 4, was used in television commercial to show how easily the bed opened and folded. Today she is the New York State parks commissioner and a well-known personality in her own right.

This Day in American History

1726- Birthday of Abraham Clark, signer of the Declaration of Independence, farmer and lawyer. Born at Elizabethtown, NJ, and died there Sept 15, 1794. One of the "ordinary" signers, representing the people of his area, originally a farmer. Two or three of the sons of Mr. Clark were officers in the army, during the revolutionary struggle. During a part of their captivity, their sufferings were extreme, being confined in the notorious prison ship, Jersey. Painful as the condition of his sons was, Mr. Clark scrupulously avoided calling the attention of congress to the subject, excepting in a single instance. One of his sons, a captain of artillery, had been cast into a dungeon, where he received no other food than that which was conveyed to him by his fellow prisoners, through a keyhole. On a representation of these facts to congress, that body immediately directed a course of retaliation in respect to a British officer. This had the desired effect, and Captain Clark's condition was improved.
http://www.ushistory.org/declaration/signers/clark.htm
http://www.colonialhall.com/clark/clark.php
1758- Benjamin Franklin brought in mustard from France and introduced it to his guests in both a dark and light yellow "mustard," hence its common name today. One of his guests was Benjamin Jackson, who established Globe Mills on Germantown Road, Philadelphia, PA, bottling and selling the product in glass bottles with his label on them. He advertised in the Pennsylvania Chronicle of February 15, 1768, that he was " the original establisher of the mustard manufactory in America, and...at present the only mustard manufacturer on the continent. I bought the art with me into the country." The truth, according to the Global Gourmet: All mustard is made in relatively the same way. The seed must be crushed, its hull and bran sifted out or not depending on type of mustard being made. It then may or may not go through further grinding and crushing. A liquid such as water, wine, vinegar, beer, or a combination of several of these liquids is added, along with seasonings and perhaps other flavorings. The mustard is mixed, in some cases simmered, and then cooled. Some mustard is aged in large containers before it is bottled and shipped to stores and customer. Although similar recipes for mustard paste appear as early as 42 AD, the use of mustard as a condiment was not widely practiced in either Greece or Rome. The Romans took the seed to Gaul, and by the ninth century French monasteries were bringing in considerable income from mustard preparations. By the 13th century, mustard was one of the items offered by Parisian sauce-hawkers, who walked the streets at dinner peddling their savory war.
1764--- The city of St. Louis was established as a French trading post. Pierre Laclede Liguest and stepson Auguste Chouteau notched a couple of trees that marked the site for Laclede's Landing that became St. Louis. August Chouteau is recognized as the "builder" of St. Louis.

1808- birthday of Cyrus McCormick, 1808. He was the first to utilize "leasing" and "finance" to promote his product, something unheard of in his day. American historians believe McCormick's invention of the reaper is second only to the railroad in the development of the United States. Continuing the dream of his father, McCormick constructed a horse-operated reaper which was demonstrated for the first time in a Virginia wheat field in July 1831. He moved his operation to Chicago, IL, in 1847 in order to be closer to the Midwest's expanding wheat fields. His business prospered despite two decades of constant litigation over patent rights. His machine also was not considered the "best" of its day. In order to get his machine on the farm, he would offer "no payment until after Harvest," "No money down," " Seasonal payments," " Rent to Own," " Lease with Ability to Trade in For New Model." He died May 13, 1884, at Chicago. The company today is International Harvester.

Winter Poem

    The Road Not Taken

            by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
